Þ George Marburger Sr. arrived in Baltimore from Germany in November of 1838. Þ First he settled in the Zelienople area, but a year later he and his family moved to Evans City. He married in 1840. In 1842, he purchased 100 acres at $1.25 per acre. Þ His son, Adam, eventually took over the farm and turned it into “Marburger Stock Farm” where they raised Belgium and Percheron draft horses, shipped from Europe. Þ By 1923, the days of working horses on farms were ending. The farm switched to dairy farming and Holstein cows. Þ In 1938, Adam and his wife Georgia bought a small dairy at May Stop. The first day of operation produced three cases of quart bottles. Þ Milk was shipped to Pittsburgh via the Harmony Line streetcars. Þ The operation grew and a few years later the dairy was moved to the homestead farm where it remains today. Þ Adam’s sons Martin, Vernon, and Joe operated the dairy as partners until first the death of Joe in 1968, and Vernon in 1983. Þ Today, Martin along with his children: James, Margaret Wearing, and Rita Reifenstein are the proprietors of the dairy.
